In Germany, BMW ultimately had to recall their 5 Series cars due to using a female voice with their GPS system. You see, according to Dr. Clifford Nass, author of \u201cThe Man Who Lied to His Laptop: What Machines Teach Us About Human Relationships,\u201d BMW was flooded with calls from German men who\u2019d bought the BWM\u2019s in question and were angry about having to take navigational directions from a woman. As a result, they issued a recall to those who wanted it to reprogram the GPS to have a male\u2019s voice.<\/li>\n<li>Former New York Herald publisher James Gordon Bennett, Jr. once owned a 300 ft. yacht, the $635,000 ($17.8 million today) Lysistrata built by William Denny &amp; Son of Dumbarton, Scotland. Among many other luxuries, the yacht included a padded stall for a cow, so he\u2019d always have fresh milk, cream, and butter while he was at sea.<\/li>\n<li>The idea that would become the Big Bang Theory (science, not the show ;-)) was proposed by a Catholic Priest, likely one of the greatest scientists you\u2019ve never heard of, Georges Lema\u00eetre. In a May 9, 1931 letter to Nature journal Lema\u00eetre wrote: \u201cIf the world has begun with a single quantum, the notions of space and time would altogether fail to have any meaning at the beginning; they would only begin to have a sensible meaning when the original quantum had been divided into a sufficient number of quanta. If this suggestion is correct, the beginning of the world happened a little before the beginning of space and time.\u201d This would be coined later in a collection of essays by Lema\u00eetre as \u201cThe Primeval Atom,\u201d which was the foundation of what would become known as the\u201cBig Bang Theory,\u201d after several other scientists would add to Lema\u00eetre\u2019s work.<\/li>\n<li>In December of 2013, Pope Francis revealed that while a student, he worked as a bouncer at a Buenos Aires nightclub.<\/li>\n<li>While people often exaggerate tiny hailstones as \u201cgolf-ball size\u201d when describing them to others, in June of 2003 Aurora, Nebraska experienced one hail of a hailstorm. The National Climate Extremes Committee documented the hail size that fell in that storm, with many being about the size of a soft ball. With time, humans have evolved to have less body hair, so what we see during certain situations such as a temperature drop or strong emotions are goose bumps on the skin rather than standing hair. So how are goose bumps formed? His first brush with death was while traveling from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik in 1962 on a train. During the trip, the train jumped the tracks and ended up in the river, which at the time was icy cold. In 1816, people living in the Northern Hemisphere did not have to imagine it \u2013 they lived it! \u201cThe Year Without a Summer\u201d was primarily the result of the April 10, 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora, which is located on the island of Sumbawa in Indonesia. (Some also attribute some of the environmental effects to extremely low solar activity at that time- the Dalton Minimum. This was also around the end of the \u201cLittle Ice Age\u201d).
