Today in History: March 14, 1971<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"rolling-stones\"<\/a>By early 1971, the Rolling Stones should have been lighting their cigarettes with \u00a3100 notes. They recently released their most successful album to date, \u201cSticky Fingers,\u201d and signed a lucrative deal with Atlantic Records to start their own label, Rolling Stones Records. But then they discovered after eight years at the top, no-one on their payroll had bothered to pay their income taxes. Whoopsadoodle…<\/p>\n

After adjusting for inflation, in today\u2019s money, each member of the band owed the British government somewhere in the neighborhood of three million pounds in back taxes. Adding to their financial woes, the band was in the midst of a bitter, complicated, all-out legal war with Allen Klein, who bought out Andrew Loog Oldham’s management contract with the Stones in 1967 and, besides negotiating extremely favorable deals for the band, subsequently swindled them out of the rights to every song they made before 1971 and quite a bit of money.\u00a0 As Klein himself so coarsely stated, “Artists f&*k groupies. According to my reputation, I f&*k the artists.”<\/p>\n

Also, a large amount of the band\u2019s earnings were frozen thanks to a lawsuit between their original management team of Loog and Oldham, and they couldn\u2019t put their hands on most of the money they had earned over the years. To complicate matters further, Loog was in court with Klein at the time as well. The situation was so dire by that point that even the Stones\u2019 personal bank accounts were overdrawn.<\/p>\n

Prince Rupert Ludwig Ferdinand zu Loewenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg, a descendant of the Bavarian royal house and founder of Merchant Bank, had met Mick Jagger in 1968. He was persuaded to apply his expertise to the hot mess that was the Stones\u2019 finances and offer his opinion as to what they should do next.<\/p>\n

During the early 1970s, French tax codes would allow the Stones to pay no taxes on their earnings as long as they resided in the country for at least a year, and spent at least $500,000 during that time. So Prince Rupert cooked up a game plan for the Stones to relocate to the sunny south of France. He then started companies in the Dutch Antilles and Amsterdam for the sole purpose of sheltering their assets.<\/p>\n

So, on March 14, 1971, the Stones left their native England to take up residence in France. They knew their first priority was recording an album to get some funds rolling in. They decided the basement of Keith\u2019s sprawling rented villa in Villefranche-sur-Mer, Nellc\u00f4te, was as good a place as any to produce their 10th studio album.<\/p>\n

In that hot, humid, dank, dark basement, the Rolling Stones recorded the double album \u201cExile on Main Street,\u201d which is not only considered one of the Stone\u2019s best albums, but one of the best rock albums of all time. The usually over-controlling Jagger seemed to have taken a chill pill. As Keith Richards described it:<\/p>\n

Mick needs to know what he’s going to do tomorrow. Me, I’m just happy to wake up and see who’s hanging around. Mick’s rock, I’m roll.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This time Mick rolled, with spectacular results.<\/p>\n

The Stones may have been the first British rock stars to become tax exiles, but they certainly weren\u2019t the last. At the time the Stones fled for the south of France, the highest earners in the UK were paying a crippling 83% to 98% tax rate! As a result, Rod Stewart packed his bags and moved to the United States in 1975, and David Bowie decided to make his home in Switzerland the following year. U2 moved to the Netherlands in 2006.<\/p>\n
