{"id":3004,"date":"2010-10-21T07:30:01","date_gmt":"2010-10-21T14:30:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.todayifoundout.com\/?p=3004"},"modified":"2012-11-27T23:30:11","modified_gmt":"2012-11-28T07:30:11","slug":"harry-houdini-piloted-the-first-airplane-that-flew-over-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.todayifoundout.com\/index.php\/2010\/10\/harry-houdini-piloted-the-first-airplane-that-flew-over-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"Harry Houdini Piloted the First Airplane That Flew Over Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"pf-content\"><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.todayifoundout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/harryhoudini.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3131\" title=\"harry houdini\" src=\"http:\/\/www.todayifoundout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/harryhoudini-e1287662466558.jpg\" alt=\"harry houdini\" width=\"340\" height=\"503\" \/><\/a><a href='http:\/\/www.todayifoundout.com' title='Interesting Facts'>Today I found out<\/a> Harry Houdini piloted the first controlled airplane flight over Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Houdini initially became fascinated by aviation in 1909, purchasing a French Voisin biplane for $5000 and subsequently hiring a full time mechanic to maintain it.\u00a0 In his first flight attempt, he crashed the plane, but with the help of his mechanic, fixed it up and made a successful flight on November 26 in Hamburg, Germany.<\/p>\n<p>One year later, in 1910, Houdini agreed to travel to Australia, something he had previously sworn never to do because of the long boat ride (he was prone to sea sickness) and the distance it would place him from his family.\u00a0 For the journey, he brought along his biplane and made the first controlled powered flight in Australia on March 18, 1910, north of Melbourne at Diggers Rest, Victoria.\u00a0 The flight lasted only one minute, due to the weather being slightly unsafe at the time.\u00a0 Later in the day, he made two more flights, the first nearly crashing, due to a side wind, and in the second managing to fly for three minutes.\u00a0 A few days later, he managed a flight that lasted seven minutes and 37 seconds, which was quite an impressive length at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly before Houdini set the record, a rival pilot, Ralph C. Banks, showed up and attempted to be the first to make a controlled, powered flight over Australia, but ended up crashing his plane due to poor weather conditions, which is why Houdini had not yet tried to fly.\u00a0 Up to this point, Houdini had left his plane only to do his performances in Melbourne and otherwise slept under his plane, waiting for a window to fly the plane when the weather was just right.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"bonusfacts\">Bonus<\/span> Facts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Harry Houdini died in Detroit, Michigan on Halloween in 1926.\u00a0 Contrary to popular belief, he didn&#8217;t die in a performance, but rather died of a ruptured appendix.\u00a0 Houdini had been suffering from appendicitis for several days when J. Gordon Whitehead decided to test Houdini&#8217;s claim that he could take any blow to the stomach.\u00a0 Whitehead didn&#8217;t give Houdini a chance to prepare himself and repeatedly punched him in the stomach area.\u00a0 This further worsened Houdini&#8217;s appendicitis, but he continued to refuse medical aid and continued to perform shows, even while holding a 104\u00b0F (40\u00b0C) temperature and passing out during one show, only to be revived and continue on.\u00a0 He died shortly after this from a ruptured appendix at 1:26 p.m. in Room 401 in Detroit&#8217;s Grace Hospital on October 31, 1926.<\/li>\n<li>Harry Houdini&#8217;s real name was actually Erik Weisz.\u00a0 When his family immigrated to America, they changed the spelling to Ehrich Weiss, which eventually resulted in people calling him &#8220;Ehrie&#8221; and later &#8220;Harry&#8221;.\u00a0 He picked &#8220;Houdini&#8221; as his professional name in homage to the French magician Jean Eug\u00e8ne Robert-Houdin.\u00a0 He added the &#8220;i&#8221; because a friend of his, Jack Hayman, told him adding the &#8220;i&#8221; at the end would make it mean &#8220;like Houdin&#8221; in French, which of course isn&#8217;t correct, but nevertheless resulted in &#8220;Houdini&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>In the early part of his career, Houdini often performed as a Wild Man in circus shows.\u00a0 Wild men were sideshow acts where the performer would do crazy things, such as bight the heads of live animals.\u00a0 &#8220;Wild men&#8221; were also <a title=\"Where the words geek and nerd came from\" href=\"http:\/\/www.todayifoundout.com\/index.php\/2010\/09\/where-the-words-geek-and-nerd-came-from\/\" target=\"_blank\">where the word &#8220;geek&#8221; came from<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Houdini&#8217;s fame initially came about due to his ability to escape various types of handcuffs and other restraining devices.\u00a0 During WWI, Houdini took an entire year off performing and voluntarily gave up several of his tricks for escaping handcuffs; teaching these tricks to soldiers, just in case they got caught by enemy troops.<\/li>\n<li>Houdini once stated that the world may forget his performances as an escape artist, but they&#8217;d never forget he was the first person to fly a plane in Australia.\u00a0 Ironically, the opposite is true. \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li>A 19 year old mechanic from South Australia stated that he flew a plane before Houdini in Australia in a Bleriot XI monoplane on March 17, one day before Houdini.\u00a0 However, the one supposed witness of this flight, Frederick H.
