After he finished, Roddenberry asked him which he liked best and he responded: \u201cWell, if you want an engineer, he better be a Scotsman because, in my experience, all the world\u2019s best engineers have been Scottish.\u201d Although he wasn\u2019t Scottish, Doohan described the character of Scotty as: \u201c99% James Doohan and 1% accent.\u201d \u201cIt was a natural. When I opened my mouth, there was Scotty.
