There is an ATM in Antarctica

There is an ATM at McMurdo Station in Antarctica, about 840 miles from the South Pole.  Not surprisingly, this ATM is the most southern ATM in the world.   The most northern ATM in the world is in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway, which is about half way between Norway and the North Pole (about 800 miles from the North Pole).  The world’s highest ATM is in Nagchu County, Tibet and is about 14,800 above sea level.  Finally, the world’s lowest ATM is in Ein Bokek, near the Dead Sea in a grocery store that is just shy of 1400 feet below sea level.

  • Is there a pole at the south pole?

    • Daven Hiskey

@Mushyrulez: We can only hope that someday the technology will exist to construct a giant pole on the north and south poles (actual axis poles, rather than magnetic) that reach into space. Next they should construct a connector between the two attached to a base “stand”; so the Earth will officially resembled a commercial globe, when viewed from space…. I should get some sleep apparently…

How can an ATM IN Norway be BETWEEN Norway and the North Pole?

@Chrispy: I’m missing a key word there I see. I meant mainland Norway. Svalbard is a group of islands north of mainland Norway, located about halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole.

  • We actually have TWO ATMs at McMurdo Station but only one is operational at a time. I wish I could attach an image so I could show you. And yes, there are two poles at the South Pole. There’s the Ceremonial South Pole which is surrounded by several nations’ flags and there’s the Geographic South Pole which is reset every year since the ice sheet is always moving.

  • So who’s actually stocking this south pole ATM with cash? How often? I mean it would suck if you swung by there and it was out of 20’s.
